The Public Access Rules seek to harmonize the Judiciary's obligation to make case information available and accessible while also protecting the privacy of personal and/or otherwise confidential information filed with the courts throughout the Judiciary. The Judiciary has developed the Rhode Island Judiciary User Guide for Electronic Filing to aid Registered Users in navigating the EFS. This access does not include access to sealed cases or documents or confidential case types, documents, or information as defined in the Public Access Rules except in specific circumstances as authorized by the Judiciary. Access to the entries listed in the register of actions or docket sheet is based upon security rights and roles as further defined in the Request for Access to Case Information and Rhode Island Judiciary Data Subscription Agreement (Subscription Agreement), a copy of which is located on the right-hand side of this page. It is also possible to perform some sort of Criminal Background Check using the tools provided by the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, the Rhode Island Judiciary or the Rhode Island sex offender registry. The Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal (Public Portal) is the point of entry for electronic access to case information from the Rhode Island Judiciary's (Judiciary) database whether at the courthouse or remotely. The Supreme, Superior, Family, District, and Workers' Compensation Courts and the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal shall have computer terminals available in the respective clerks' offices in each of the courthouses for use by anyone who wishes to review the electronic documents filed in the Judiciary's case management system during regular business hours. The Criminal Information search portal of Rhode Island Judiciary is a public searchable database that can be used to search case information in the courts of Rhode island. The Rhode Island Judiciary Rules of Practice Governing Public Access to Electronic Case Information (Public Access Rules), a copy of which can be found in the Court Rules box to the right, are intended to address access to electronic case information that is filed in the EFS. This access does not include access to sealed cases or documents or confidential case types, documents, or information as defined in the Rhode Island Judiciary Rules of Practice Governing Public Access to Electronic Case Information (Public Access Rules). Although the search engine doesn't provide criminal records, it gives access to judiciary dispositions and case reports, which can be translated and interpreted as information relevant to a criminal background check.
